The leader of a loaded Mooney team (13-0 through Nov. 17) that has been near the top of the national rankings all season, McCarthy – the younger brother of current Irish junior safety Kyle – suffered a herniated disk in his neck on Nov. 10, bringing a premature end to his senior campaign.
McCarthy passed for 425 yards and six scores this season, but did more damage with his legs, rushing 154 times for 1,219 yards (7.9 average) and 15 scores. He also averaged 18 yards on 11 punt returns. Defensively, he added 47 tackles (29 solo, 18 assist) and five interceptions.
In his junior season, McCarthy recorded 112 tackles, seven sacks, and two interceptions. Offensively, he had 233 rushing attempts for 1,910 yards and 21 touchdowns. He carries a 3.8 GPA.
