Release: Kelly Picks Up More Coaching Honors

Kelly continues to rack up postseason coaching honors following an unbeaten regular season at Cincinnati in 2009.


New Irish head football coach Brian Kelly continues to round up honors for his turnaround of the Cincinnati program, which culminated with a 12-0 finish in the regular season last fall that had the Bearcats ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation, and he was most recently named the 2010 winner of the Lee Tressel Ohio College Coach of the Year by the Northeastern Ohio Chapter of the National Football Foundation it was announced Thursday morning in a release from Notre Dame's athletics department.

In three years at Cincinnati, Kelly posted a 34-6 record, capped by the perfect regular season last fall that also earned him Home Depot’s national coach of the year award. He was named coach of the year by the Big East after each of his three seasons with the Bearcats (2007-09).

Kelly's overall record in 19 seasons as a head coach is 171-57-2, which makes him the seventh-winningest active coach in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision in terms of victories. His career took off at Grand Valley State where he produced a 118-35-2 record that was highlighted by NCAA Division II national championships in 2002 (14-0) and 2003 (14-1). Kelly then spent three seasons at Central Michigan University from 2004-06 and turned that program into a Mid-American Conference champion by going 9-4 in 2006.

He will be presented the the Lee Tressel Ohio College Coach of the Year award at the at the 22nd Annual Scholar-Athlete Awards banquet on Monday, April 26 at LaCentre Banquet Center in Westlake, Ohio.

According to the University's release, Kelly will be joined on the banquet dais by 2010 Distinguished American award winner and two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin; as well as 2009 Distinguished American award recipient - Ohio State University Athletics Director Gene Smith (St. Peter Chanel High School), who will present Griffin with his award; and OSU Head Football Coach Jim Tressel (Berea High School), who will be presenting the Lee Tressel Ohio College Coach-of-the-Year Award, named after his father.
