Hurd Jr. Jumps On Board As No. 18

Missouri City (Texas) Marshall cornerback Toney Hurd Jr. took an official visit to Notre Dame for the Sept. 19 matchup against Michigan State. It wasn’t clear where the Irish were in terms of his recruitment approaching his visit, but things started to make more sense for him after the Irish 33-30 victory.

“I enjoyed myself,” the 5-foot-9, 184-pound prospect reported after his visit. “I was welcomed by a group of fans and they actually knew who I was. They all clapped and said they wanted me to be there. I could definitely see myself there.”

And he will see himself there as he became the No. 18 verbal commitment of the 2010 recruiting class.

“It’s official,” the Scout.com three-star recruit and the No. 28 cornerback in the nation confirmed with BlueandGold.com after the news of his decision had surfaced.

Hurd recorded 87 tackles, 16 pass breakups, five interceptions and one fumble recovery in 2008.

He planned on taking a couple more visits with a continued consideration in Florida State, Ohio State and Texas A&M, but felt he may have been edging closer to a decision.

“I’m just praying on everything,” he said in late September. “In my heart, I feel it’s about time for me to commit, but I know that I still need to figure some things out.”

A month later, it was just the right time.

Hurd is the third cornerback to commit to the Irish in his recruiting class with the others being Spencer Boyd of Cape Coral, Fla. and Lo Wood of Apopka, Fla.
