The Irish potentially wrapped up their recruiting efforts at defensive end with a commitment from Lakewood, Calif.’s Justin Utupo yesterday, and now the same can be said for the quarterback position as BlueandGold.com has learned that the Irish received a pledge from Tommy Rees of Lake Forest, Ill. this morning.
He makes the eleventh verbal of the 2010 recruiting class. The Irish have always had their sights set on two signal callers in the class. There was some uncertainty about whether the coaches would find a second option to extend a scholarship after landing Cincinnati (Ohio) Moeller’s Andrew Hendrix.
After watching him throw twice during the May evaluation period, Rees performed well enough during the June 30th camp to be the next QB with an offer in hand. He initially planned on deciding within the next couple of weeks among Notre Dame, Stanford and Tennessee, but he decided to close out his recruitment sooner.
His brother, Danny, is a senior punter at UCLA. While the other recent verbals have rooted for the Irish, Tommy actually grew up a Bruin fan, but was impressed with Notre Dame during his visit for camp.
The 6-foot-3, 192-pound prospect threw for 2,200 yards, 22 touchdowns and eight interceptions in ten games as a junior, earning all-conference and all-area honors.
He’s ranked by Rivals.com as a three-star prospect. On Scout.com, he’s listed as a three-star prospect and the nation’s No. 83 quarterback.
