Dan McCarthy is a 6-foot-2, 190-pound prospect out of Cardinal Mooney High School in Youngstown, OH. He's reported a bench-max of 280 pounds, a squat-max of 435 pounds, and he runs the 40 in 4.5 seconds.
McCarthy excels at both the quarterback and safety positions for Cardinal Mooney, earning Division-4 Offensive Player of the Year and Ohio High 1st Team All-Defense honors last season as a junior when he recorded more than 2,600 yards of total offense and 29 touchdowns to go with 112 tackles.
He committed to the Irish on Monday, July 16th, becoming the 18th recruit from the 2008 class to give his verbal pledge to Charlie Weis and his staff.
“It feels great to get the decision out of the way and I couldn’t be more excited about it,” McCarthy told BlueandGold.com's Jason Sapp Tuesday morning following his commitment. “Out of all the places that I’ve been, I just got a different feeling at Notre Dame. It just feels like home.”
He is projected to join his older brother, Kyle, in Notre Dame's secondary beginning in 2008.
“I’m not worried about [competing with Kyle],” McCarthy said jokingly. “Honestly, I’ll just have to look at him as another player on the field. I know the coaches are looking to put the best players on the field, so I’m looking forward to the competition.”
