That's Not Good Enough

Dear Charlie:

I had a great time this weekend at Notre Dame, but I did notice a few things that I would like to mention. Your motto used to be "Nasty" and now it is "Just Dive In" that's all fine and dandy, but you have got to lead by example.

I brought my 14 year old son with me and he was more enthusiastic during the pep rally and game than you were. You can't expect someone to do something just because you tell them to, you have to show them that you care enough yourself. Show them what the results will be.

You showed NO EMOTION whatsoever, what did you do to motivate these young men? It looks like nothing from where I am at. They are making stupid mistakes on the field and you are doing NOTHING. Lou used to be in their face and put them on the bench to think about what they just did. They are looking for future jobs in the NFL and need to know they are being interviewed and judged every moment on and off the field.

I can quote you numerous great quotes and speeches from previous coaches that will and have gone down in history forever, when are you going to write one and use it ?

All I can remember you saying is that that we are 6 and 5 and that's just not good enough, well, THAT'S NOT GOOD ENOUGH. If you would like, call me and I can write you some material to use that would be better than that.

Also, I believe something is owed back to me and my family for the many years of dedication we have proven to the University and thousands and thousands of dollars we have spent on getting robbed on tickets, driving 7 hours, tolls, clothes, hotel rooms, food while there, etc.

We are and will always be fans, but we need to see some better results, for god's sake. THIS IS NOTRE DAME. These are All-Americans on this team and what does this mean to you?

Again, how about a free pass for me and my family for being loyal for so long, and I wasn't kidding about the speech. This was my son's first pep rally and he was really excited, I just wish he could have felt the sensations of what they used to be like.

One last thing in closing, please quit going to the NFL for advice. Everytime I turn around I am reading that you keep meeting with Parcells for advice. You want someone to give you good advice ? Go have lunch with Lou Holtz. He is very classy and I know he would help you more than anyone in the NFL ever could. Those men in the NFL alreay have incomes that the majority of us will never see, we need to focus on motivating our young men, and captains so they can make history and secure future jobs themselves.

Sincerely,

Putty David
